The perspective of opening a Box may appear very tempting as it promises an autonomous future in which to organize by itself work and time and while for many people is the opportunity to build a future professional, for others represents an opportunity to get away from an employee work, maybe not even too loved, to move to a more fulfilling profession full of satisfaction. In short, opening a Box is for many the dream of their entire life.
While it is true that their dreams should be pursued, it is also true that before making the big leap, it would be advisable to make some reasoning that begins with an objective assessment of the feasibility of what you would like to do, up to the drafting of a real operational plan in which nothing should be left to chance to avoid, then, to have to return to their steps.
The first consideration to be made is that a Box, irrespective of the legal form under which it is to be framed, is an enterprise and as such should be considered regardless its legal form. As in any enterprise there are in fact investments that must be repaid and current costs to be supported for its operation that are claimed with revenues. Any company can survive only if it is able to pay the costs related to its operation with the money that comes from the revenues of its activities and if it is not able to do so is doomed to fail; this also applies to a box.
Just to give an example, let's say that Charles, after having obtained his L1, decides to open an affiliate box in the place where he resides which is a small mountain village with 200 inhabitants which is 25km from the nearest municipality. Charles found a space that he thinks is suitable on 400sqm, a former stable abandoned to be renovated and that's where he wants to open his Box.
If Charles thinks that having 200 inhabitants, his Box can have at least 100 of them, it is probable that Charles is a dreamer who is about to slip into a big trouble
Charles should ask himself how much it costs to renovate the stable, how many "customers" thinks it must have to cover the costs like electricity, rent, taxes and so on and how many to be able to repay the investment supported in setting up the Box. If Charles thinks that having 200 inhabitants, his Box can have at least 100 of them, or they are all his relatives or Charles is a dreamer who is about to slip into a big trouble.
We know, the example we made is a little naive but it serves to make it clear that not always what seems a good idea, if you make the necessary considerations in an objective way, then really it is so. For this reason, there are tools like BP that are used to ask questions and to understand if you really will be able to operate your own Box.
Of course the talk about BP is not only the one related to money, even it is the fuel that runs the whole "machine" but it is also a matter of analyzing various other aspects of the management of an enterprise such as the type of service , competition, pricing model, the way in which we will sell the service, the methodologies with which we will manage the company, the staff, the way in which we will divide the tasks and so on. In short, the drafting of a BP, in addition to providing a kind of manual of the company, will also aid to reflect on how to organize it understanding also where are the weak points of the entrepreneur and what actions to take to solve them.
As we usually repeat always, better a disappointment today than a problem tomorrow although we understand that being objective, in some cases, is rather difficult and often there is a real risk of ending up with the overestimate their own ending up working 20 hours a day and wondering who made you do it.
Once you have acquired this simple concept, which is often underestimate because of enthusiasm for the project, the most sensible step to make is the drafting of a business plan or BP. It is a document usually divided into two parts in which the entrepreneur, or in our case the affiliate, will describe punctually everything he is going to do to set up and operate his Box. The BP is a very useful tool first to understand if what you are going to start is a project that can have some success, or if it is an announced "bloodbath".
And here we open one of the most critical chapters in the management of a box: the personnel. It is not conceivable that a person, alone, is able to do everything that a business management requires, both because he cannot have all the skills, or because he cannot physically have the time to do everything. So then one of the first considerations to do is the work team and the tasks of each component distributed so that at the end of the day you have done all that you have to do and remains time for yourself. A good work team is one in which there are all the skills required by the type of enterprise divided between the various components that do not necessarily must all be present.
Just think of the accountant that is part of the work team even if sometimes provides advice to say the least bizarre, related more than anything to communication problems with the affiliated. For example, we will have a head coach, maybe even the only coach, flanked by someone who will take care of customers/members, from someone who will manage the accounting and maybe someone else to sell the service or to facilitate the sale. Sounds weird? And who pays all these people? And who controls everyone doing well? And how will they integrate?
Answering these questions is the task of the entrepreneur, in our case of the affiliate who, if he responds "Ah well but I do everything", we will inevitably find a couple of years at least to have problems ranging from not having a moment of time for himself, to burnout, from not understanding why new people do not arrive, to no longer be able to understand that he needs a solution to all these situations. Those of you in this loop should know that the lack of an initial business plan is the main cause.
Of course the BP does not only cover the organization of the people and the finances but also other aspects of which we will deal in a next post. If in the meantime you are already on track and you are starting to ask questions, be advised that an effective plan can be drawn up at any time, starting from the present situation.
